Life is full of choices, and it's never easy to make the tough decisions. It would've been easy to take the job at Cornell, stay in Ithaca, stay a NY state resident forever, and dream of a nicer place to live where I didn't have to shovel snow.
The opportunity to move to Myrtle Beach sounded exciting, as did the opportunity to work for an employer that seemed to actually want me to be there.
Just being in Myrtle Beach when Julie and I came down for the interview lead me to REALLY want the job. I've spent most of the times I actually watched the Superbowl freezing my butt off somewhere in NY. The 2006 Superbowl was spent at Hooters in Myrtle Beach. Julie and I enjoyed a crazy night of watching the game and drinking beer under a backdrop of palm trees. It felt right, and I wanted to be here.
The next day I felt very, very confident coming out of the interview. This confidence lead to signing a lease for our apartment before even getting the final word that they wanted me for the job.
Here I am four months later, and I know Julie and I made the right decision. We both really enjoy the area. There's so much to do, and so many places to go. Even the pleasure of doing nothing but sitting on the beach watching the waves roll in or looking for sea shells is so nice.
I'll leave you with a few more pictures to look at from yet another day at the beach, and some wisdom from Billy Connolly that I think of regularly while at the beach. "In the water two things really motivate me. One is shark fins, and the other is toilet paper."
